Light as a Building Material

Daylight is the first material we place on a site — before timber, before stone, before a single line is drawn. Treated as a material, it has weight, direction, and texture, and it shapes how a home is inhabited hour by hour.

Light as a Building Material

Orienting to the sun's path

Every home begins with a solar survey. We map the path of the sun across the seasons and orient the building to capture low winter light while shading against the high summer sun. Clerestory windows and light wells carry that light deep into the plan.

Softening through deep reveals

Direct light is harsh; filtered light is generous. Deep window reveals, timber screens, and frosted glass soften daylight into a glow that moves gently across surfaces through the day.

When light is treated as a material, a home becomes a calibrated instrument for living with the day. It is the most honest material we build with — free, renewable, and impossible to fake.
