The Hands Behind Rammed Earth

Rammed earth is among the oldest building techniques on earth, and one of the most honest. Each wall is a literal cross-section of the site's geology — layered soil tamped by hand into a monolithic, load-bearing surface.

The Hands Behind Rammed Earth

Layering the site's geology

We source soil from the building site itself, mixing it with a small percentage of lime or cement for stability. Each lift is tamped by hand, leaving horizontal striations that record the day the wall was built.

Aging gracefully

Unlike fired materials, rammed earth improves with age. It absorbs and releases humidity, regulating indoor climate naturally, and its surface deepens in tone over decades of use.

A rammed earth wall is a record — of the land, of the hands that built it, and of the years it will shelter. There is no finer expression of building with a place rather than upon it.
